ZDF – Berlin studio

The ZDF Berlin studio envisaged a flexible studio installation and set demanding criteria for its systems integrator. Public institutions generally have to choose the lowest-priced provider in a Europe-wide tender. The project’s complexity allowed the department to use a special procurement procedure in which price was not the determining factor. Instead, the concept’s suitability was central. As a full-service provider with our own design and mechanics department, we presented a detailed concept that met the requirements.

The brief called for four LED walls of different sizes that could be used individually or combined in many configurations. This would allow different studio formats to be set up quickly and flexibly. Because the studio generates substantial heat, an energy concept for the LED wall was also required.

The solution was a moving structure with complex mechanics and pneumatics, ensuring no gaps appeared when the walls were joined. A 50 m² Cold LED wall with a 1.5 mm pixel pitch was developed jointly with an LED manufacturer in China.

Our own departments handled the concept, product development, production, installation and commissioning entirely in house. They also provide service and maintenance for the complex system.
